Operation Highjump (1946-1947)
The Story
Witness Narrative
Operation Highjump was a United States Navy expedition conducted in Antarctica between August 1946 and February 1947 under the command of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Officially known as The United States Navy Antarctic Developments Program, the mission involved over 4,700 personnel, 13 ships, and dozens of aircraft to train personnel, establish the Antarctic research base Little America IV, and conduct extensive aerial mapping of the continent. In the decades following the expedition, Operation Highjump became the subject of numerous conspiracy theories involving unidentified flying objects, hidden Nazi installations, and alleged encounters with advanced technology. These claims are not supported by the historical record or official expedition documents, but they have become a lasting part of UFO and paranormal folklore. Today, Operation Highjump remains one of the most frequently referenced Antarctic expeditions in discussions surrounding unexplained phenomena.
