Battle of Los Angeles (1942)
The Story
Witness Narrative
During the early morning hours of February 25, 1942, anti-aircraft batteries in the Los Angeles area opened fire after unidentified aerial objects were reported following heightened wartime concerns on the U.S. West Coast. Searchlights illuminated the night sky while thousands of rounds of anti-aircraft ammunition were fired. No enemy aircraft were confirmed to have been shot down, and no evidence of an attack was found. Contemporary military statements and later historical analyses have suggested the incident may have resulted from a combination of weather balloons, false alarms, wartime nerves, and visual misperceptions. The event has nevertheless become one of the most well-known historical UFO cases due to photographs of searchlights converging over Los Angeles and continuing public debate about what was observed.
