Phoenix Lights (1997)
The Story
Witness Narrative
On March 13, 1997, thousands of witnesses across Arizona and parts of Nevada reported seeing unusual lights in the sky. Reports included a large V-shaped or triangular formation moving across the state between roughly 7:30 and 10:30 p.m., followed by a later row of bright lights seen over the Phoenix area. Some witnesses described the formation as silent, massive, and moving slowly overhead. The event became one of the most widely discussed UFO sightings in modern American history. Later explanations identified the first formation as military A-10 aircraft flying as part of Operation Snowbird, while the later lights were attributed to illumination flares dropped during training exercises near the Barry Goldwater Range. Despite official explanations, the Phoenix Lights remain a major historical case in UFO culture.
