Roswell Incident (1947)
The Story
Witness Narrative
In early July 1947, debris recovered from a ranch northwest of Roswell, New Mexico, became the subject of one of the most widely discussed UFO incidents in history. On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release announcing that personnel had recovered a "flying disc." Later that same day, military officials stated that the recovered object was a weather balloon. Decades later, the incident became closely associated with extraterrestrial theories, while subsequent U.S. government reports concluded that the debris originated from Project Mogul, a classified balloon program. The Roswell Incident remains one of the most influential historical cases in UFO culture.
